This movie stars Lindsey Lohan who is a new student at a school in USA. She was home schooled as a child in Africa and experiences a new atmosphere as a student at a proper school. The film contains comedy and drama (humour and serious content) and is aimed at 15 to 25.
Sound
During the trailer itself, we can see that the sound throughout majority of it is ambient sound along with dialogue which would be known as diegetic sounds. Majority of the trailer is dialogue but is used to show certain parts of the movie but there will always be background music which would also be like asynchronus sound because it does not match what we can see on the screen. It adds to the excitement in the movie. The music overall is pretty girly which is what the film is about. The different types of genre of music that has been used supports the type of film it is.
Half the way through the trailer we can hear that a character is using dialogue as a narrative to explain images that are on the screen that the audience can see which is a non diegetic sound. They have done this to show the audience in detail exactly what the narrator is talking about. Their dialogue which we can hear doesnt match what we see on the screen but does explain what we see on the screen. This is normally what I have seen in films that tell a story or set the scene before they get into the main part of the movie.
The pace of music also speeds up when we see that the speed of the trailer, as in the editing speeds up to sum up the movie and add more excitement to the trailer. They have done this in order to chuck all the most important and best parts of the movie at the audience in quick flashes to draw attention to the movie more.
Lighting
The lighting in this trailer has been used to replicate reality. This is to make it look as natural as possible. For example the shots in the canteen and outdoors in the daytime look as natural as possible. We can support this by saying the costumes that the characters are wearing show us that the day outside must be warm and sunny which suggests that the lighting shown is correct.
Mise en scene - "everything in the frame"
Throughout the trailer we can see that the setting has been based around where students would normally be. In this case we can see that its based in a school and we can see what happens around the school grounds and inside the school. In order to make it look like a proper school, the director has made sure that they can see the surroundings to be as exactly the same as a normal school would look like. This helps the audience to recognise the area easily, rather then waiting for some sort of dialogue or action to show it. With the mise en scene we can see that the lighting helps show what time of the day it is and also helps show the weather which can then tell you what time of the year it could be.
The costume worn by the characters in the trailer are casual and very student like meaning in many schools and colleges we can see that there are students that you can divide into groups - casual, overdressed, smart. The fact that our protagonist is dressed like a school girl helps show what kind of film it is. The director has dressed the character with baggy and boy like clothes, with a shoulder bag and hair tied up. This gives the audience the look of a innocent student that goes to a school. The colours used in the clip are very natural and bright which is what you would normally see at a big school. Theres no uniform, so students would be allowed to wear whatever they would like to wear which is where you would see all the colour. Overall with mise en scene we can see that the director has tried to keep the film very natural showing the student life with normal students in it. Its a film portraying student lives which can happen anywhere.
Editing & Camerawork
In this clip we can see that the editing and camerawork has been made pretty simple. Majority of the shots are basic cuts to jump to a different shot which works with the dialogue. Some scenes we can see that they have exaggerated scenes in order for it to create a bigger impact on the audience. This will help them understand the introduction of the characters better. The camera angles change so we can get a different perspective of the characters and story, this helps draw the audience into the movie more because it creates a sense of realism which makes it pretty interesting. The director has made sure that when showing clips of conversations, they have used the over the shoulder shot so the audience can see both characters in shot. This makes sense because the introduction of the characters have already been done through the dialogue in the movie. In order to see that there are different scenes from different parts of the movie the director has used jump cuts to show the passing and change of time. This allows the audience to see more of the film in little takes so it can give them a taste of the comedy and drama in the film. Dramatic transitions and reaction cuts have been made to make certain parts of the trailer stand out to engage the audience.
Freaky Friday (2003) Mark Waters
This movie is about Lindsey Lohan who plays a rebellious teenager who gives her mum a hard time. Both characters have a disagreement before a family meal and are tricked into having fortune cookies that make them switch bodies. The challenge is to adapt to each others life style for a day without telling anyone the truth. This film is also a comedy drama and is aimed at teenagers who may be able to relate to the characters.
Sound
The sound throughout the trailer is a mixture of synchronus, asynchronus, diegetic, non diegetic and ambient sounds. This is because the sounds are overlapping in order for the director to create a exciting pace to the trailer. This creates a sense of excitement and drama to the trailer and film. Majority of the sounds matches the images and scenes on the screen making it a synchronus sound. We also have an ambient sound running behind the entire trailer, changing in between, this helps create the disney mystery. We also hear the narrator at the back of trailer which is the asynchronus, non-diegetic sound because we cant see where the voice is coming from. The narrator helps tell the story and set the scene for the audience to understand what is happening. Theres a lot of sounds for us to hear which may confuse the audience because of the overload but it does help make the trailer effective and fun. There different types of soundtracks that have been used - especially the "Freak out" soundtrack that has been used which relates to the film. This is effective because its something that could be memorable for the film. These soundtracks can be classed as ambient sounds because they are played in the background of the narrator and actors speech.
Lighting
The lighting in this trailer has been used to replicate reality. This is to make it look as natural as possible. For example the shots in the bedrooms/house and outdoors in the daytime look as natural as possible. We can support this by saying the setting and mise en scene shows us the lighting is correct.
Mise en scene - "Everything in the frame"
Throughout the trailer we can see that the shots have been based around each characters daily lifestyle. We can see from the trailer that the teenager in the film loves her bedroom. This is a perfect example os showing how everything in the mise en scene works to show the audience where and what is going on. The directer has set everything so that it looks like a teenagers bedroom - the bed, sign on the door, clothes on the floor, pictures, photo frames, teddy bears and colour arrangement in the room is a perfect example of a student/ young persons room. The costumes worn in the trailer portray the right kind of characters. The student wears young clothing - jeans, short tops, accessories to match but then we see that the adult who plays the mother shows that she is mature and smart wearing the smart office wear. This helps show who is older/younger and who has the more responsible role to play in the movie.
Editing & Camerawork
Everything in the trailer is very fast moving making it attract the attention of the audience. To show the pace of life they have sped up the pace of the scenes to create the right effect. There is a lot of transitions and quick cuts to show different scenes as quick as possible. To make the trailer fun they have also used animated transitions. Fading to black and white in the editing helps show passing of time in trailer meaning that it is jumping from one scene to another. The editing and camerawork in the trailer has been made to go at a fast pace so that it goes at the same pace as the music that has been used in the trailer.
